SCAD Research, Inc. and the SCADaddle 5k Committee of Sarasota will be hosting their first annual SCADaddle 5K Run and Kids Fun Run/Walk in Sarasota on Saturday, April 14, at Payne Park. The 5K starts at 8 am and features both overall and age group award winners. Cost for the event is $30 for adults and children ages 12 and older, and $15 for children ages 6-11. Children under 6 are free. The purpose for the SCADaddle 5K is to raise money and awareness for further education and research into Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD), the leading cause of heart attacks in healthy women under the age of fifty, as well as pregnant women and new moms. Although less common, SCAD can affect men, too. Funds generated by the event will help support a Mayo Clinic study currently being conducted to identify the causes and best treatment options for people suffering from this condition, which can be fatal. The Sarasota race joins other SCADaddle 5k’s currently taking place in California, Illinois and Pennsylvania. To date, those events have raised more than $635,000 for the Mayo Clinic study to date.
