Siesta Key, FL — Siesta Key Oyster Bar, or SKOB as the locals call it, is the Hot Spot on Siesta Key, a very high volume bar and restaurant in the heart of Siesta Key Village. SKOB has gone single-use plastic straw free as part of an International campaign, #StrawlessOcean. and local campaign Rethinking Plastic Sarasota. SKOB began the transition from single use plastic last year when we began focusing on the big 5 single use items that are bad for our environment. They stopped using plastic bags, Styrofoam clamshell to-go containers and single use plastic cups last year by switching to paper bags, and compostable to-go supplies and cups. “The transition from single-use plastic was a pretty easy process. The challenge was finding substitutes that were also relatively cost effective. They ARE out there! But you do have to look“ says General Manager, Stephanie Brown. “Learning how many straws we use and also becoming aware of our impact as a restaurant made making the change an easy choice, even with a slightly increased cost.” We live and work steps away from one of the #1 Beaches in the world! It’s a small thing for us, our waitstaff, and our customers to do in order to leave our environment much better off.” Siesta Key Oysters Bar is part of an International and local movement to rethink plastic and strive for a single use plastic free environment. We realize that this is a small step forward in solving a bigger problem but we are excited to be part of the #SwitchTheStraw movement and hope others align with us to increase the positive impact.
