The Fabric of India illustrates the variety, technical sophistication, and adaptability of Indian textiles from the fifteenth to the twenty-first centuries. Through a stunning range of historical dress, carefully preserved fabrics, and cutting-edge fashion, discover how Indian textiles have been interwoven with religion, politics, and global trade for centuries. Organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Fourth Quarter: Senior Athletes, their Indomitable Spirit April 13-July 21, 2019 This exhibition features new work by acclaimed photojournalist David Burnett, commissioned by his 2017 Greenfield Prize at the Hermitage Artist Retreat. For his latest project, Fourth Quarter, Burnett has spent nearly two years photographing senior-aged athletes from around the country who dedicate themselves to serious physical competition and team sports. In this engaging series, he treats his subjects with reverence as he celebrates their tenacity and challenges us to rethink our notions of what aging means in the 21st century. Interpolations: Artwork from The Ringling and Monda Collections Through Sept. 8, 2019 This new exhibition presented inside the Arthur F. Searing Wing in the Museum of Art brings together artworks from The Ringling’s permanent collection of modern and contemporary art and selections from Keith D. and Linda L. Monda’s collection. In spring 2018, the Museum added to its grounds Beverly Pepper’s Curvae in Curvae (2012), the lyrical sculpture in Cor-ten steel, which is a part of four promised gifts from the Monda family. The other three promised gifts are compelling works by artists Teo González, Yayoi Kusama, and Richard Serra. These gifts significantly enrich The Ringling's holdings of works by important artists working today, some new to the collection. The artworks enable the Museum to present a broader, and more complex history of late twentieth- and early twenty-first-century art. These new promised gifts will be featured along with other selections from Monda’s collection and key works from the Ringling’s own growing collection of modern and contemporary art. Natasha Mazurka: Order Systems Through Sept. 29, 2019 Order Systems, the first US solo museum exhibition by Natasha Mazurka, debuts a new body of paintings, embossings, and site-specific installations using textured layers of colored vinyl. Mazurka’s work centers on the communicative potential of pattern by sampling and combining visual references from a spectrum of disciplines, including architecture and biology, data analytics, and instructional code. The resulting visual syntax seen in her work stems from intense research looking into different pattern languages and ways they are designed to lend order to our experiences. Through processes of manipulation and synthesis, her projects flatter and disturb concepts of certainty and stability residing within pattern systems existing all around us. Turrell Skyspace: Joseph’s Coat Thursdays & Fridays at sunset, Museum of Art Joseph’s Coat Skyspace is a triumph of technology, engineering, and aesthetics. The Skyspace, created by internationally-renowned artist James Turrell, is a gathering place for contemplation, and sustained experience. At sunset, a sophisticated system of LED lights is employed to change the color of the space. In doing so, the artist changes the context in which you view the sky and can radically change your perception of the color of the sky and its spatial relation to you. As you gaze up at the sky through the 24 foot square aperture in the ceiling, you are invited to contemplate light, perception, and experience. Yoga mats are encouraged. Dress for outdoor conditions. Arrive 30 minutes prior to sunset. The program will last one hour. Tickets are $10/Free for Members, available at ringling.org.
