Inaugural Air Conditioning Fast-Track Training Coming to Newtown
Sarasota, Fla. (April 24, 2019) - CareerEdge Funders Collaborative, the workforce development initiative of the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce, is working with Cool Today to develop an HVAC Maintenance Fast-Track Training at the Roy McBean Boys & Girls Club, which will launch in May. Employers are looking for a way to first recruit and rapidly train people in the maintenance process, and then to further develop these employees over time through mentorships and apprenticeship programs. CareerEdge brought employers together to determine the industry’s workforce needs and to identify the specific components of this new program.
“One of the biggest challenges in the Construction Trades sector is not only the tight labor market, but also finding candidates that are eager to learn. This program will give individuals solid foundational skills and an opportunity to grow and expand in this field, which has lots of upward mobility for motivated workers”. says Mireya Eavey, Executive Vice President of CareerEdge.
The tuition-free class will begin May 28 and run through August, with classes held in the evenings on Tuesday through Thursday (6:00 p.m. – 9:00 pm Tuesday & Thursday; 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday) at the Roy McBean Boys & Girls Club, 1790 21st Street, Sarasota, FL 34234. The program will include CareerEdge’s Bridges to Careers soft-skills training. Cool Today employees will volunteer to teach, enhancing the hands-on, real-world nature of the program.
Funding for the program is made possible by the City of Sarasota, Argus Foundation, The Harry and Jenette Weinberg Foundation and the generous support from Cool Today.
Applicants’ eligibility includes having a clean background, a clean drug test, a valid driver’s license, the ability to lift 75 lbs. and the physical capability to be in attics and high temperature environments. CareerEdge is also working with the public defender to help try to resolve driver license issues and expungements for minor violations to enable more individuals to enroll in future trainings. No technical experience is required to apply for the free program. Applicants will be screened by CareerEdge and employers during an information session. Graduates will have the opportunity to be hired by the HVAC employers involved, at an average starting wage of $15.00 per hour.
To register, interested candidates should go to: https://careeredgefunders.org/bridges-to-careers/ and select Newtown HVAC Program. Individuals must register by Friday, May 3.
