Bird Key Yacht Club Expands Footprint New “Aft Deck” Doubles Seating on Sarasota Bay For more information contact: Kristine Nickel kristine@nickelcommunications.com 941 928-5572 For Immediate Release . . . Bird Key Yacht Club, one of the region’s most venerable private clubs, has once again capitalized on its enviable position on Sarasota Bay. The club recently completed construction on its outdoor dining “Aft Deck”. In naval terminology, the aft is the rear of a ship and at the yacht club, this dining area sits similarly, facing the Sarasota city skyline across the Bay. While an outdoor dining area constructed in the 1950s had been in this location, it was demolished to make way for the newly designed facility. The new design, crafted by Parker Walter Group, doubles the available seating as well as completes the enhanced appearance of the bayside of the club which, includes a multi-million dollar 2017 reconstruction of the original marina and seawall, bocce ball courts and an outdoor cocktail and fire pit lounge. New landscaping, designed by landscape architect Tim Borden, creates a cohesive look. J E Charlotte Construction was the Aft Deck contractor. “A beautiful team effort,” explained Larry Ford, president of the Bird Key Yacht Club Foundation, which spearheaded the project. The foundation along with the Board of Governors of the club worked in tandem to develop and execute the outreach effort that resulted in the approval of the project. About Bird Key Yacht Club Bird Key Yacht Club traces its history to one of the most dazzling developments in Sarasota Bay. The clubhouse is located on the site of the New Edzell Castle, the mansion constructed in 1914 by the Worcester family and purchased in 1922 by John Ringling as part of his acquisition of Bird Key. Ringling intended to use the mansion as the winter White House for President Warren G. Harding. Arvida Corp. created the Bird Key Yacht Club in 1959 as part of its development of the barrier island. Although the Club is named for its location, it has never been for the exclusive use of Bird Key residents. It welcomes members from across the area and the world.
