October 3, 2019) -----On Saturday, October 26, 2019 at 7 pm at the Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club, BEST (Brain Expansion Scholastic Training) Academy is excited to host and honor Dr. Lisa Merritt of the Multicultural Health Institute (MHI) in Sarasota, Florida. BEST Academy is dedicated to providing under-represented and disadvantaged youth in Tampa Bay the opportunity to experience first -hand the many exciting and complex careers in the medical field. Participants are exposed to health-related professions in programs that are educational, engaging and fun. 96% of the BEST Academy’s program participants will go on to college to pursue their dreams. At the Gala, Dr. Merritt will have the opportunity to describe her career, mentorship and community health and prevention outreach through the MHI. The mission of MHI is to level the playing field for vulnerable individuals and communities who are more susceptible to health inequities. The work of MHI over the past 25 years has been to advocate for eliminating healthcare disparities and expansion of the future pipeline of individuals from under-represented backgrounds entering health careers. Through a variety of live and online events and use of culturally relevant materials, MHI educates people about individualized health and wellness plans, and how to navigate the healthcare system. MHI Scholars participate in summer and yearlong programs where college, high school and middle school students have the opportunity to learn from a variety of hands on experiences. Students are exposed to careers in the medical field with ongoing access to careers mentors, academic and career planning.
