The Brain Health Initiative invites you to learn more about the importance of sleep at the February Brain Health Matters! Lecture Series, How to Be Better in Bed: Sleep is a fundamental pillar of brain health. Michael J. Breus, PhD, Clinical Psychologist and Board Certified Sleep Specialist, discusses the basic mechanisms of how sleep works in the brain, the importance of sleep cycles and circadian rhythms, how sleep changes as we age and how we can all accommodate to these changes at the Feb. 17 event at The Grove Ballroom in Lakewood Ranch. In addition, he will describe how sleep deprivation (from apnea to sleeplessness) affects all aspects of brain health and neurological disease. He provides several techniques to help you determine your personalized bedtime, create a personalized pre-bed routine, develop strategies to avoid waking up in the night and how to wake up feeling refreshed and ready to meet the day. The program opens at 4:30 p.m. with Dr. Stephanie Peabody, Creator and Founding Director of the Brain Health Initiative, who provides an introduction to the Brain Health Initiative and discusses why lifestyle matters to brain health.
