Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties partner with David Weekley Homes to host Education Day MEDIA CONTACT: Erin Guzzo, Director of Communications eguzzo@bgcsdc.org 941-366-3911 SARASOTA, Fla. (April 30, 2024) – In partnership with David Weekley Homes, Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties recently hosted an Education Day for nearly 75 elementary-aged Club members from Sarasota, Venice, North Port and Arcadia for a day of learning, team building, and camaraderie through academic challenges. Each of the organizaton’s six Club locations, plus one School Site (Gocio Elementary), was represented by an 11-person team to compete in various educational competitions including Lego® engineering, speed-typing, naming states, public speaking, strategic games, and drawing contests. To build momentum, Club staff worked closely with members for weeks leading up to the event to practice skills, administer drills, and foster a strong sense of teamwork and good sportsmanship. Following outstanding performances from all of the teams, the Robert and Joan Lee Club from Venice claimed the top spot, with the Gene Matthews Club from North Port and Sarasota’s Goicio Elementary School closely trailing behind in second and third place, respectively. Ten-year-old Club member Gentry H. from the Gene Matthews Club team enthusiastically shared how much he had really enjoyed the day saying, It was fun to compete and meet kids from other Clubs. I also liked seeing a different Club from the one I go to. It was a super fun day and I can’t wait to do it again!” David Weekley Homes provided volunteers and funding support through the David Weekley Homes CARE program — a community outreach initiative that encourages Team Members, Homebuyers, and partners to volunteer with local non-profit organizations, and make a positive impact in the communities they serve. Roscelyn Guenther, BGCSDC’s Director of Program Services who was instrumental in planning the event said,; “The 2024 Education Day provided an opportunity for members to exhibit their abilities across a range of academic and enrichment areas, all while proudly representing their Club, and learning the importance of teamwork.” BGCSDC looks forward to continuing to seek fresh and innovative approaches like Education Day to engage youth and empower them to reach their full potential.
