SARASOTA, FL, June 2025– An original and thought-provoking new musical with book and lyrics by Jim Semmelman and composer David Shenton is poised to captivate Sarasota audiences as Brush Strokes sets its sights on local stages. With over 30 years of experience in theater, television, and film, Jim's extensive credits include directing, producing, and choreographing national tours and Broadway productions, as well as creating the touring children’s musical Mooseltoe. David Shenton is a New York–based English composer, pianist, and violinist whose work spans Broadway, film, and international stages, including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. Following a successful run at the Philipstown Depot Theatre in Garrison, NY, this emotionally profound production is seeking new performance opportunities in Sarasota, a city known for its deep appreciation of the arts.

Brush Strokes is a contemporary three-character musical dramedy centers on Virginia Harper, a celebrated artist in her 70s, who has long suppressed her emotions and career following the tragic deaths of her family years earlier. Her life is shaken when  one of her art students, Eric Anderson, a charismatic and brash former alcoholic, who is also a successful lawyer, infiltrates her life and gradually works his way into her heart. As their relationship deepens, Virginia’s unresolved past and a critical decision about end-of-life care comes to the forefront, raising the question: Is love worth the risks? As told through the eyes of her loving and devoted granddaughter Mitzie, a quirky millennial, Virginia must confront her fears, find a balance between love and independence, and ultimately make a heartbreaking choice that will define her future.

This isn’t your typical musical—Brush Strokes is an immersive experience that combines storytelling and a soaring musical score with innovative projections, replacing conventional sets to create scenes where perspective constantly shift.
