Free Workshop Teaches Locals to Assist Sick, Injured and Orphaned Birds

SARASOTA, FL – Have you ever seen an injured bird and wished you knew how to help? Save Our Seabirds is offering a free Wild Bird Rescue Training Class on Saturday, June 28 from 10 a.m. to noon at its City Island campus, 1708 Ken Thompson Parkway. This hands-on workshop equips community members with the skills needed to safely rescue and transport sick or injured wild birds for rehabilitation.

No prior experience is necessary - just a passion for wildlife and a desire to make a difference. Participants will learn how to recognize signs of distress in birds, use proper handling techniques, and transport birds with minimal stress. The class also includes guidance on when and how to safely intervene in the wild, plus a chance to practice techniques using “Petey the Pelican,” an adored plush training stand-in.

“This class is a great entry point for people who care about wildlife but aren’t sure where to start,” said Jonathan Hande, lead rehabilitator at Save Our Seabirds. “Every rescue counts, and with the right training, anyone can become a part of that life-saving effort.”

Volunteers can choose their comfort level - from responding to songbirds in their neighborhoods to assisting with larger species like raptors. All materials and instruction are provided, and participants who complete the class will be invited to join Save Our Seabirds' rescue and transport team!

“Birds are the wildlife we encounter every day. They delight us in so many ways,” said Lorin Driggs, a longtime volunteer rescuer. “What a wonderful gift to be able to help when one is in trouble!”

Seating will be provided outdoors on the lower level of Save Our Seabirds, but participants are welcome to bring a folding chair for comfort. Attendees should also bring water and dress for Florida’s summer weather.
