River Eckert Music Compound masterclass

Music Compound to host teen piano phenom River Eckert for masterclass

At just 15 years old, River Eckert is already turning heads nationwide with his soulful playing, his deep roots in the New Orleans music tradition, and collaborations with numerous music legends. On Thursday, July 17, local music school Music Compound is thrilled to offer the community a rare opportunity to learn from this rising musical star during a masterclass.

Eckert is a piano player born and raised in New Orleans, La. Eckert – who began his musical journey at the tender age of 3 – has been surrounded by music his entire life, coming from a musical family. Immersed in the styles of legends such as Professor Longhair, James Booker, Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, Fats Domino, Art Neville and others, he is passionate about and dedicated to “carrying the torch” of the New Orleans piano tradition.

While he initially studied classical music, Eckert's teachers eventually encouraged him to explore blues and jazz, recognizing his natural ability to quickly grasp those styles. Now, Eckert sings and plays in both a solo piano and full band setting.

Eckert has had the privilege of performing and recording with notable artists such as George Porter Jr., Ivan Neville, Stanton Moore, Anders Osborne, Luther Dickinson, Fred Wesley, Big Chief Donald Harrison Jr., Cornell Williams, and many more. He has performed at prestigious venues and events including the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Tipitina’s, Maple Leaf Bar, Civic Theatre, Chickie Wah Wah, French Quarter Festival, NOLA Funk Festival, and Oak Street Po-Boy Festival as well as made many radio and TV appearances.

He is rapidly gaining local and national popularity, and has recently started recording his first studio album, with numerous renowned collaborators. His debut single, "Pass That Torch," was released in October 2024, and the full album is expected to be released this year. Eckert was also recently featured in three Playing for Change video recordings; Playing for Change was created to inspire and connect the world through music.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled for a young artist of River’s stature to visit with and inspire area musicians with his insights and experiences,” said Music Compound owner/president Jenny Townsend. “River’s growth as a musician and touring professional shows that – with the proper support and dedication to one’s craft – age is no impediment to career success. We look forward to welcoming and learning from River on July 17!”

During the masterclass, Eckert will share his approach to songwriting, stage presence, musicianship, and live performance. Whether a pianist, vocalist, or aspiring musician in general, this session will offer attendees valuable insights, plentiful motivation, and unforgettable inspiration.
